Newspaper clippings, 1888,1896-1948.

This series contains Florida newspaper clippings collected in scrapbooks primarily by the State Board of Health for the years 1896 to 1948. Volumes 1-6 deal with special topics. Volume 1, dated 1888, falls outside the main date span and contains news accounts of the yellow fever epidemic in Jacksonville for that year. Volumes 2, 4, and 5 deal with epidemics in Key West and Pensacola. Volume 3 is the personal scrapbook of State Health Officer, Dr. Joseph Y. Porter, and volume 6 is the personal scrapbook of Dr. Hiram Byrd.

Article XV of the 1885 Constitution provided for the creation of the State Board of Health, but the Board was not created until the 1889 special session of the Legislature (1889, Ch. 3839, Laws). The session was called by Governor Francis Fleming when yellow fever reached epidemic proportions. The Board was given powers to investigate and prevent yellow fever, smallpox, and cholera.
